The next night, Abigail returned to St. Augustine's Asylum with a sense of trepidation. The events of the previous night still haunted her, but she was determined to uncover the truth behind the strange occurrences. As she began her shift, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Around midnight, Abigail made her way to Room 312 to check on Emily. She found the young girl sitting up in bed, her eyes wide with fear. "Emily, are you okay?" Abigail asked gently, sitting down beside her. Emily shook her head, clutching her teddy bear even tighter. "The shadows were here again," she whispered. "They whispered to me." Abigail’s heart ached for the frightened child. "Did they say anything specific?" Emily nodded, her voice trembling. "They said they were coming for me." Abigail’s grip tightened on the bed’s railing. "Emily, I promise you’re safe here. I won’t let anything happen to you." As she spoke, Abigail noticed something out of the corner of her eye. Sitting on the bedside table was an old, creepy doll. Its porcelain face was cracked, and its glass eyes seemed to follow her every move. A shiver ran down her spine. "Emily, where did this doll come from?" Abigail asked, her voice steady despite her unease. Emily glanced at the doll, her face paling. "I don’t know. It was just there when I woke up." Abigail picked up the doll, examining it closely. It was worn and dirty, with a faded dress that looked decades old. She had a sinking feeling in her stomach. "I’m going to take this with me," she said, trying to sound reassuring. "I’ll keep it safe." Emily nodded, relief flickering in her eyes. "Okay." Abigail left the room, the doll clutched in her hand. She made her way to the nurse’s station, where Carla and a couple of other nurses were chatting. "Hey, Abby," Carla greeted, noticing the doll. "What’s that?" Abigail placed the doll on the desk. "I found it in Emily’s room. She doesn’t know how it got there." One of the other nurses, Beth, leaned in closer to look at the doll. Her face paled. "I’ve seen one of these before." Abigail’s heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?" Beth swallowed hard. "A few years ago, we had another patient, a little girl named Sarah. She kept talking about shadows and seeing things that weren’t there. One night, we found a doll just like this in her room. A few days later, she disappeared." Abigail’s blood ran cold. "Disappeared? How?" "No one knows," Beth replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "One night she was there, and the next morning she was gone. No sign of forced entry, no trace of her anywhere." Carla chimed in, her face serious. "I’ve heard similar stories from other nurses who used to work here. Dolls like this have appeared before other disappearances. It’s like they’re a warning." Abigail felt a wave of dread wash over her. "Why wasn’t I told about this before?" "It’s not something we like to talk about," Carla admitted. "Most of us chalk it up to old ghost stories and rumors. But if it’s happening again..." Abigail looked down at the doll, its glass eyes glinting in the dim light. "We need to do something. We can’t let anything happen to Emily." Beth nodded. "Agreed. We need to keep a close watch on her and see if we can find out where these dolls are coming from." As the night progressed, strange incidents began to escalate. Flickering lights, cold spots, and whispers seemed to plague every corner of the asylum. Abigail felt the weight of unseen eyes on her at every turn. Around 3 a.m., she decided to take another look at the doll. She placed it on a table in an empty room and examined it closely. There was something unsettling about its lifelike features and cracked porcelain face. Suddenly, the temperature in the room dropped, and Abigail’s breath became visible in the cold air. The doll’s eyes seemed to glow faintly, and she heard faint whispers echoing around her. "Who are you?" she whispered, her voice shaking. The whispers grew louder, but she couldn’t make out any distinct words. It was as if the doll was trying to communicate with her. She reached out to touch it, and a shock ran through her hand, causing her to pull back. "Abigail!" Carla’s voice called from the hallway. Abigail turned to see Carla standing in the doorway, her face pale. "What is it?" she asked, trying to steady her breathing. "Emily’s gone," Carla said, her voice filled with panic. "We can’t find her anywhere." Abigail’s heart dropped. "No, she can’t be. I just checked on her." They rushed to Room 312, finding the bed empty and the window slightly ajar. Abigail’s mind raced. How could she have disappeared so quickly? "We need to search the entire building," Abigail said, her voice firm despite her fear. "We’ll find her." As they searched the dark hallways and rooms of the asylum, the whispers seemed to follow them, growing louder and more insistent. Abigail felt a sense of dread settling over her. The shadows Emily spoke of were real, and they were closing in. They searched for hours, but there was no sign of Emily. The doll’s presence seemed to mock them, its glass eyes watching as they frantically looked for the missing girl. Finally, as dawn approached, they gathered back at the nurse’s station, exhausted and defeated. "What are we going to do?" Carla asked, her voice breaking. Abigail looked at the doll, determination hardening in her eyes. "We’re not giving up. We’ll find Emily, and we’ll figure out what’s happening in this place. We have to." As the first rays of sunlight filtered through the windows, Abigail made a silent vow. She would uncover the truth behind the shadows and the dolls, no matter what it took. Emily’s safety depended on it, and Abigail wasn’t going to let her down. The strange incidents had escalated, and the danger was real. But Abigail was more determined than ever to face the darkness and protect those under her care.
