Chapter 24: Sickness.

As I descended the stairs, my stomach growled with anticipation of a warm breakfast, a familiar routine that had been a constant in my life for as long as I could remember. But, to my surprise, the kitchen was empty, and the counters were bare. No freshly brewed coffee, no toast, no scrambled eggs. A sense of unease crept over me, as I wondered if Mom had forgotten or was running late.
But, as I turned to head back upstairs, a nagging feeling prompted me to check on Mom. I made my way to her room, pushing open the door slowly, and that's when I saw her. She was still in bed, wrapped in her bedsheets, her face pale and clammy. Her eyes were sunken, and her skin had a faint grayish hue. She looked...sick.
My heart skipped a beat as I rushed to her side, concern etched on my face. "Mom, what's wrong? Are you okay?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.
She weakly opened her eyes, a faint smile on her lips. "Hey, sweetie...I'm so sorry about breakfast. I didn't feel well enough to get up and make it for you."
I felt a pang of worry and guilt for not noticing her condition earlier. "Oh, Mom, why didn't you tell me? You should have woken me up, and I would have taken care of you!"
She tried to sit up, but winced in pain, her hand clutching her forehead. "I didn't want to bother you, Gianna. You've been going through so much already...I didn't want to add to it."
I quickly grabbed a glass of water and some medication from the bathroom, helping her sit up and take her medicine. As I supported her back against the headboard, I realized that she must have been hiding her condition from me for a while, not wanting to burden me with her own struggles.
A mix of emotions swirled inside me – worry for Mom's health, guilt for not noticing her struggles, and a deep appreciation for her selflessness and love. I made a silent promise to take better care of her, to be more attentive and supportive.
With Mom tucked back into bed, I took charge of the household, determined to alleviate her responsibilities and let her rest and recover. I started by tackling the kitchen, whipping up a quick breakfast for myself and making sure the dishes were washed and put away. Then, I moved on to the living room, tidying up the cushions and vacuuming the floor, making sure everything was spotless.
Next, I headed to the laundry room, sorting the clothes and throwing them into the washing machine. I made sure to switch them to the dryer later, folding and putting them away in our respective closets. I even took out the trash and recycling, making sure the bins were empty and clean.
As the day went on, I found myself taking on more and more tasks, from dusting the furniture to mopping the floors. I was determined to keep the house running smoothly, just as Mom would have done if she were feeling better. And since it was the weekend, I didn't have to worry about rushing to get to school or work, so I could take my time and do everything thoroughly.
As I worked, I couldn't help but think about how much Mom always did for me, and how I often took her efforts for granted. She was always there, supporting me, caring for me, and loving me unconditionally. And now, it was my turn to return that love and care, to show her that I appreciated everything she did for me.
By the end of the day, the house was sparkling clean, and I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. I had taken care of everything, just as Mom would have wanted. And as I checked on her, seeing her sleeping peacefully, I knew that I had done something good, something to make her proud. I sat down beside her, holding her hand, and whispered, "Get well soon, Mom. I've got this."
As I woke up on Sunday morning, I followed my usual routine, washing my mouth and heading to the kitchen to start my day with a nutritious breakfast. But, just like the day before, the kitchen was empty, and no food was prepared. A sense of worry crept over me as I realized Mom's condition hadn't improved.
I quickly made my way to her room, concern etched on my face. As I entered, I was met with a sight that made my heart sink. Mom's condition had deteriorated significantly overnight. Her face was pale and gaunt, her eyes sunken, and her skin had a grayish hue. She was struggling to breathe, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
I felt a surge of panic and fear, realizing that her illness was far more serious than I had initially thought. I knew I had to act fast, and taking her to the hospital was the only option. I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed the emergency number, my hands shaking as I tried to explain the situation to the operator.
As I waited for the ambulance to arrive, I sat beside Mom, holding her hand and trying to comfort her. She weakly opened her eyes, a faint smile on her lips. "Gianna...I'm so proud of you...taking care of me...being strong," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Tears streamed down my face as I replied, "Don't worry, Mom. I'm here for you. I'll always be here for you." I held her hand tighter, trying to transfer my strength and love to her.
The sound of the ambulance sirens outside was a relief, and I quickly directed the paramedics to Mom's room. They swiftly assessed her condition and began administering oxygen and other treatments. As they loaded her into the ambulance, I followed, my heart heavy with worry but determined to support her every step of the way.
The ride to the hospital was a blur, but I remember holding Mom's hand, praying for her recovery, and trying to stay calm. As we arrived at the hospital, the medical team quickly took over, rushing her into the emergency room.
I was left standing in the waiting area, feeling helpless but determined to support Mom through this challenging time. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I was ready to face whatever lay ahead, knowing that my love and care would be a beacon of hope for her recovery.
