Chapter 9 UNMASKING THE TRUTH

Sarah stood frozen, the remnants of the broken flash drive scattered like fallen dominoes at her feet. Keera and Joshua, their faces flushed with a mix of triumph and apprehension, held Sarah's fate precariously in their hands.
Suddenly, a gust of wind whipped through the park, carrying with it the unmistakable sound of a frustrated groan.
"Seriously, guys? Picking on Sarah again?"
Keera and Joshua whirled around to find Iñigo standing behind them, his brow furrowed in a mixture of concern and anger. His gaze darted between Sarah, who seemed close to tears, and the broken pieces of plastic at Keera's feet.
"What's going on here?" Iñigo demanded, his voice laced with suspicion.
Keera's heart plummeted. Before she could explain, Sarah seized the opportunity.
"They're... they're lying, Iñigo!" she cried, her voice trembling. "They're trying to make up stories to humiliate me!"
Fury surged through Keera. "It's not a lie, Sarah! Your father—"
"Enough!" Iñigo cut her off, his gaze hardening. "This is getting ridiculous. Can't you just leave her alone?"
Keera felt a wave of frustration and betrayal wash over her. Here she was, finally standing up for herself, and Iñigo thought she was the villain?
"It's not that simple, Iñigo," Joshua tried to explain, but Iñigo wasn't listening.
"Simple enough for me," he scoffed, throwing Sarah a sympathetic look. "Come on, Sarah. Let's get you out of here."
He offered her his hand, and Sarah readily accepted, clinging to his support like a lifeline. As they walked away, Sarah shot Keera a triumphant smirk, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth.
Keera watched them go, a whirlwind of emotions swirling inside her—defeat, frustration, and a flicker of something new – a flicker of jealousy. Seeing Sarah walk away with Iñigo, a boy who believed her without question, stung more than she cared to admit.
"Great," she mumbled, kicking a stray pebble across the ground. "Just great."
Joshua sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Look, Keera, I'm sure he just misunderstood."
"Misunderstood?" Keera snapped. "He thinks we're bullies, making up stories! How can he take her side so easily?"
Joshua hesitated, then sat down on a nearby park bench. "Maybe because she's good at playing the victim," he offered cautiously. "And maybe because..." he trailed off, his voice barely a whisper.
"Because because what?"
Joshua met her gaze, a hint of something deeper flickering in his eyes. "Maybe because he likes her."
Keera's breath hitched. The thought hadn't occurred to her before, but now that Joshua mentioned it, it made a sickening kind of sense. Iñigo's protectiveness towards Sarah, his unwavering belief in her innocence – it all pointed towards a deeper connection.
A heavy silence descended upon them, broken only by the chirping of birds in the nearby trees. Keera felt a lump form in her throat. Had her chance with Iñigo already slipped away? Was she destined to be the outsider, forever stuck on the sidelines?
Just as despair threatened to consume her, Joshua spoke again, his voice softer this time. "But hey," he said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "At least we got rid of the blackmail video, right?"
Keera forced a smile. He was right. Even though things hadn't gone exactly according to plan, they had at least accomplished something.
"Yeah," she agreed, her voice barely a whisper. "At least that."
〰・♡・〰
Lunchtime buzzed with the usual Agora High chaos. But for Keera, the cafeteria felt eerily quiet. Every laugh, every conversation seemed to amplify the hollowness where Iñigo's presence should have been. He hadn't spoken to her since the park incident, his icy glare during English class a constant reminder of her perceived betrayal.
Across the table, Joshua picked at his salad, his usual carefree banter replaced by a thoughtful frown. "Look," he started, but Keera held up a hand, stopping him.
"Don't worry about it," she sighed, picking at her fries. "It's not your fault."
But it felt like her fault. She hadn't handled the situation with Sarah well, and now Iñigo thought she was a cruel liar. A lump formed in her throat. Maybe she should just apologize, and explain everything again.
Just then, Sarah sashayed into the cafeteria, her posse trailing behind her like a gaggle of gossiping geese. She caught Keera's eye and shot her a triumphant smirk, sending a fresh wave of irritation through Keera.
Suddenly, an idea sparked in her mind. Maybe there was another way to reach Iñigo. A way that didn't involve endless apologies.
A Risky Plan
After lunch, Keera found Iñigo practicing his guitar in the empty music room. He looked up with a scowl as she entered, his fingers pausing on the strings.
"What do you want, Keera?" he asked curtly.
"Not a fight," she replied, holding up her hands defensively. "I just wanted to show you something."
She pulled out her phone and played the grainy video of Sarah leaving detention. Iñigo watched intently, his brow furrowed in concentration. When the video ended, a flicker of doubt washed over his face.
"What is this supposed to mean?" he asked, his voice guarded.
"It means Sarah might not be entirely truthful," Keera explained. "She wasn't even home when her father supposedly confessed."
Iñigo stared at her, his expression unreadable. The seed of doubt she had planted seemed to be taking root, but it wasn't enough. He needed more.
"It's still not proof of anything," he said finally, pushing himself up from the stool.
"Maybe not," Keera admitted. "But it's a start, right? And there could be more. Maybe if we looked into it..."
"Look into what?" Iñigo snapped. "Become some kind of high school detective? That's not who I am, Keera."
His frustration stung, but Keera refused to back down. "Maybe," she countered, her voice rising in defiance. "But neither is letting someone walk all over you because they're good at playing the victim."
Iñigo's jaw clenched. He took a deep breath, his anger simmering down. He glanced at her, a flicker of something she couldn't decipher crossing his face.
"Fine," he conceded. "But if this is a wild goose chase, I'm out."
A Secret Alliance
A thrill shot through Keera. It wasn't exactly a confession of trust, but it was a start. Iñigo was willing to listen, to investigate further. They spent the rest of the afternoon after school huddled in the library, scouring online articles and piecing together information.
As the day wore on, something unexpected happened. A sense of camaraderie bloomed between them. They laughed as they stumbled upon an article about a recent embezzlement case with a suspiciously similar company name. They argued good-naturedly over potential leads and dead ends.
By the time the last rays of sunlight faded, they hadn't found concrete proof, but they were closer than they had been before. And something else had shifted. Keera no longer felt like the outsider looking in. They were in this together, an unlikely duo united by a common goal.
"So," Keera began, packing up her bag. "We keep digging tomorrow?"
Iñigo hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah," he said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "But only if you promise not to jump to conclusions anymore."
Keera chuckled. "Deal. But only if you promise to at least consider the evidence before accusing me of being a liar."
He grinned a genuine smile that lit up his whole face. "Deal."
