Chapter 2 The Price of the Deep
The journey to Cape Cabuyao was arduous, not just because of the weather. Xhen had faced fierce opposition from his mom. She worried about him venturing out during typhoon season, studies neglected for a wild goose chase after mermaids.
"A map, Xhen? Don't be silly," she'd said, her voice laced with concern. "Those are just stories your Lola tells. You need to focus on school, not some fantastical adventure."
But Xhen couldn't shake the feeling that the map was real, a key to unraveling the mystery that had ignited a fire within him. Lola's unwavering support, despite her reservations, bolstered his resolve. Finally, after a tense argument and a promise to be back soon, Xhen managed to convince his mom to let him go.
The worn map crackled in Xhen's hand as he stood before his mother, his backpack slung over his shoulder. Her worried frown mirrored the stormy skies above. "Are you sure about this, Xhen?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
"Mom, I have to try," Xhen insisted, his gaze fixed on the map. "This map could be the key to finding Alona, and maybe even understanding why she and the fisherman were separated all those years ago."
Lola, standing beside him, placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "He's right, Ina. This isn't just about some wild story anymore. It's about finding answers, about closure."
Xhen's mother sighed, her eyes flitting between them. "I understand your curiosity, Xhen," she said, "but this is dangerous. The sea can be unforgiving, and who knows what secrets lie beneath those waves."
"We'll be careful, Mama," Xhen promised, squeezing her hand. "We'll find Old Man Mateo and see if he can help us decipher the map. He knows these waters better than anyone."
His mother hesitated for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Alright," she said, a hint of resignation in her voice. "But promise me you'll stay by Lola's side, and come back as soon as you have some answers."
Relief washed over Xhen. "Thank you, Mama! You won't regret this." He leaned in and gave her a tight hug, the familiar scent of her embrace a source of comfort.
With a final wave goodbye, Xhen and Lola set off towards the small fishing village nestled at the foot of Cape Cabuyao. The wind whipped at their faces, carrying the salty spray of the sea. The map, clutched tightly in Lola's hand, seemed to hum with anticipation.
They located Old Man Mateo at the harbor, mending his nets with practiced ease. His weathered face creased in surprise when he saw them. "Lola Reyes," he rumbled, his voice raspy. "What brings you back to Cape Cabuyao after all these years?"
Lola introduced Xhen, explaining their quest to find the mermaid grotto and the map they had discovered. Mateo's gaze fell on the map, his eyes widening in recognition.
"This map," he said, his voice low, "it belonged to my grandfather. He was a fisherman too, and they say he had dealings with… well, with creatures of the deep."
A shiver ran down Xhen's spine. "Dealings? You mean he knew about Alona?"
Mateo eyed them both warily. "Some things are best left undisturbed, young man. The sea holds secrets, and sometimes, those secrets are better kept hidden."
Disappointment gnawed at Xhen. Had they come all this way for nothing? But Lola stepped forward, her gaze steady.
"Mateo," she said, her voice firm, "we aren't here to disrupt anything. We just want to understand a story that has haunted me for years. And maybe, just maybe, we can help set things right."
Old Man Mateo chewed on his lip, his eyes filled with a storm of emotions. The weight of the past seemed to press down on him. Would he choose to remain silent, or would he finally share the secrets he had kept buried for years?
The silence stretched taut, punctuated only by the rhythmic crash of waves against the harbor wall. Xhen watched Old Man Mateo, his weathered face a battleground of emotions. Fear mingled with a flicker of something akin to longing, a hint of a past he clearly wrestled with.
"Alright," Mateo finally rumbled, his voice surprisingly heavy. "But before I tell you anything, you need to understand the risks. The world beneath the waves isn't some friendly fairytale. Mermaids, they say, are beautiful creatures, but their allure can be deadly."
A thrill shot through Xhen, a mix of excitement and apprehension. "We're prepared for danger," Lola interjected, her voice resolute. "We just want to hear the whole story."
Mateo sighed a deep breath that seemed to carry the weight of years. "It all started with my grandfather, Tiago. He was a skilled fisherman, known for his bravery and his uncanny connection to the sea. One stormy night, he was caught in a terrible tempest. He thought he was a goner, but then…"
He paused, his gaze drifting out towards the vast expanse of water, his voice dropping to a whisper. "He saw her. A woman with hair like seaweed and eyes that shimmered like moonlight. She saved him, brought him to a hidden grotto beneath the waves. They say it was a place of breathtaking beauty, where coral castles shimmered and strange creatures danced in the bioluminescent glow."
Xhen's heart hammered in his chest. This was it. This was the story he'd craved, the story of Alona and the fisherman, coming alive through Mateo's words.
"They fell in love," Mateo continued, his voice tinged with sadness. "Tiago and the sirena, Alona. But their love was forbidden. The sea and the land, they are two different worlds, and their destinies lay apart."
"What happened?" Xhen blurted out, unable to contain his curiosity. "Did they stay together?"
Mateo shook his head slowly. "There was a conflict, a human who threatened the peace between the worlds. Tiago, in trying to protect Alona, broke a sacred vow. As punishment, he was forced to return to the surface, his memories of Alona stripped away, leaving only a deep ache in his heart."
A wave of sadness washed over Xhen. He could almost feel Tiago's pain, the yearning for a love lost, a world he could no longer access.
"But there's more," Lola said, her voice breaking the silence. "The map. It must lead to the grotto, a way for Tiago, or someone in his lineage, to find Alona again."
Mateo met her gaze, a flicker of hope igniting in his eyes. "Perhaps. But the magic that protects the grotto is strong. Only someone with pure intentions, someone connected to the original bond, can pass through the veil."
Xhen felt a weight settle on his shoulders. The map, it seemed, wasn't just a guide. It was a test, a challenge to prove his worthiness to enter the realm of the mermaids.
"What do we need to do?" Xhen asked, his voice filled with determination. "How do we find the grotto and help Alona, if that's what she wants?"
Mateo studied him for a long moment, his eyes searching Xhen's face for an answer he himself might not know. "There's an old ritual," he said finally, his voice low. "It requires a sacrifice… a gift of immense value offered to the sea in exchange for passage."
A sacrifice? Xhen's mind raced. What could they possibly offer the vast, unpredictable ocean that would be deemed worthy of opening a path to the mermaid's world? The quest, it seemed, had just taken a dangerous and unexpected turn. Would Xhen and Lola be willing to make the necessary sacrifice? And if they did, would it be enough to unravel the mysteries of the past and reunite two star-crossed lovers?Download Novelah App
