Chapter 57 Guardians' Encounter with the Deceptive One

Guardians' Encounter with the Deceptive One
CHAPTER 57
My jaw hung slack. "Dad?" The word came out more like a croak, a foreign sound in the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me.
The man standing in the doorway wasn't the clean-cut businessman I vaguely remembered from childhood photos. Lines etched his weathered face, and his eyes, though crinkled at the corners from laughter lines, held a haunted depth.
"Sam," he rasped, his voice rough with disuse. "It's good to see you… finally."
A million questions clamored for release, but my voice remained lodged in my throat. How did he find me? Where had he been all these days? Was he here to help, or was this something else entirely?
Elise seemed to sense my confusion. "Mr. Ash," she said, her voice clipped but polite. "We were just…"
"Explaining things to Leo," Dad interrupted, his gaze flickering to his former protege. "I see he's alright."
Leo, still processing the situation, simply nodded curtly. The air crackled with a tension that made even Zoey, usually quick with a joke, stay silent.
Dad shuffled further into the room, his movements stiff. He cast a weary glance around the messy apartment, taking in the remnants of our frantic search for information.
"Looks like you've been busy," he mumbled, a hint of a ghost of a smile playing on his lips.
"Why are you here?" I finally managed, the words tumbling out in a rush. "Where have you been? And what do you know about Umbra?"
Dad sighed, the sound heavy with a burden I couldn't fathom. "Let's just say," he began, his voice dropping to a low murmur, "I know more about Umbra than you might think. And my absence… well, let's just say it wasn't entirely voluntary."
He walked towards a dusty window, his back momentarily turned to us. The light glinted off a silver chain around his neck, a faint symbol glinting beneath his shirt. It was the same symbol we'd seen etched in the forbidden library – the mark of a Guardian.
"There's a lot you don't know, Sam," he continued, his voice laced with a bitter edge. "A lot about our family, about your past. And about the true nature of the darkness you're facing."
He turned back around, his gaze locking with mine. It was a look that held a lifetime of regret, a plea for understanding.
"But first," he said, his voice hardening, "we need to talk about your mother."
"What about her?" I whispered, dread twisting in my gut.
Dad's face hardened, his eyes turning stormy. "She wasn't just some civilian caught in the crossfire, Sam. She… she was a Guardian too. And her death…" He trailed off, his face etched with a pain so raw it stole my breath away.
"Her death was the reason Umbra rose," he finished, his voice a mere rasp.
Mom? Was she dead? Why? There were lots of questions arising in my mind.
The revelation hung heavy in the air, a truth that shattered everything I thought I knew. My mother, a Guardian? And her death, the catalyst for this looming war against the darkness?
As Dad began to explain the intricate web of lies and secrets that had kept me in the dark, I knew our lives were about to change forever. The fight against Umbra had become personal, and a new layer of complexity had been added to the already volatile mix.
Was my father a friend or foe? Could I trust him after all these past few days of silence? And most importantly, could I handle the truth about my past, a truth that threatened to rewrite everything I thought I knew about myself?
The questions swirled in my mind, a storm brewing beneath the fragile façade of our newfound reunion. One thing was clear: my journey as a Guardian had just taken a drastic turn, leading me down a path paved with long-buried secrets and a darkness that seemed to hold the key to both my past and my future.
A prickling sensation crawled up my spine as Dad spoke. It wasn't a feeling of recognition, but a subtle dissonance, a wrong note in a familiar melody. My gaze darted to the silver chain around his neck, the symbol glinting under the harsh light. It was… off. The edges seemed too sharp, the lines not quite right.
"Wait," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy narrative. "Something's wrong."
Elise and Leo exchanged confused glances, but Dad didn't flinch. "What do you mean, Sam?" he asked, his voice smooth as ever.
But my focus was on the symbol. I reached into my pocket, pulling out the worn scroll we'd retrieved from the abandoned library. The intricate symbol etched on its cover, the one that marked a Guardian, was different from the one hanging around Dad's neck. This one was… twisted. Corrupted.
"The symbol," I blurted out, thrusting the scroll towards him. "It's not the same."
Dad's eyes flickered for a fleeting moment, a flicker of something dark and predatory. Then, a slow smile spread across his face. "Ah, observant, aren't we?"
The smile sent a jolt of terror through me. It wasn't the smile of a father, filled with pride or regret. It was a predator's smile, a predator who had enjoyed the hunt, the deception.
"You're not my dad," I growled, the realization crashing down on me like a tidal wave.
The smile widened, revealing pointed teeth that glinted in the dim light. "Indeed not, young Guardian," the creature rasped, its voice no longer holding any resemblance to Dad's. "But you see, deception is my specialty."
With a horrifying crack, the creature's form shifted. The lines on his face smoothed, his features morphing into something vaguely reptilian, his eyes glowing with an unnatural yellow light.
A shapeshifter.
Adrenaline surged through me, momentarily pushing back the wave of terror. This creature had been toying with us, playing the part of the concerned father to gain our trust. But how long had it been here? Did it know where Mom was?
"Where's my mother?" I roared, channeling my fear into anger, the vortex of light in my hand pulsing with renewed intensity.
The shapeshifter chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. "Ah, your precious mother. Such a valiant Guardian, fighting for the light until her very last breath." Its yellow eyes gleamed with malicious amusement. "And so very close to uncovering the truth."
It lunged, its transformed form a blur of claws and fangs. We barely had time to react. Elise launched a telekinetic blast, sending the creature staggering back. Zoey, with newfound agility honed by her brush with darkness, darted out of the way just as the shapeshifter's claws swiped at her.
Leo, still recovering but eyes blazing with determination, joined the fray. The apartment erupted into chaos, furniture overturned and debris flying as we fought off the creature that had dared impersonate my father.
But the shapeshifter was fast and ruthless. It dodged our attacks with an unnatural grace, its claws leaving bloody gashes wherever they landed. Just as it lunged towards Zoey, I slammed into it, channeling a burst of light that sent it sprawling across the room.
"Tell me where my mother is!" I screamed, my voice raw with a mixture of rage and desperation.
The shapeshifter cackled, a sound that echoed with a chilling satisfaction. "Oh, she's close, young Guardian. Very close. But not close enough for you to save her."
Suddenly, a chilling realization dawned on me. This shapeshifter wasn't here by accident. It was here for a reason – to distract us, to keep us occupied while it did something else, something far more sinister.
"It's after the artifact," I yelled, a horrifying truth clicking into place. "The one Dr. Evans mentioned. The one that could tip the scales in Umbra's favor."
The shapeshifter's laughter died down abruptly, replaced by a hiss of surprise. It had underestimated us, reveled in its deception for too long. Now, the jig was up.
"Foolish Guardians!" it roared, its voice laced with a desperate fury. "You may have outsmarted me this time, but you won't stop Umbra's rise!"
With a final, ear-splitting screech, the shapeshifter lunged towards the window, shattering the glass and disappearing into the night.
We stood there, panting, the silence broken only by the mournful wail of the wind. The apartment was a mess, a testament to the chaotic battle that had just unfolded.
