Chapter 10 Torn Between Two Hearts

As Javier's mother drove them home from school, his silence hung in the air like a heavy fog. His mother and brother glanced at him, their eyes filled with concern.
"What's wrong, son?" his mother asked gently. "You've been so quiet all day."
Javier shrugged. "Nothing," he muttered.
His brother, Ian, rolled his eyes. "Don't give us that, Javier. We know something's up."
Javier sighed. He knew he couldn't keep his silence forever. "I'm just thinking," he said finally.
"About what?" his mother asked.
"About Andrea," he admitted.
His mother's eyebrows rose. "Andrea? Your new friend?"
Javier nodded. "She's really special, Mom. I really like her."
"That's nice to hear," his mother said. "So, why are you so down?"
Javier hesitated for a moment. "I'm not sure," he said. "Maybe I'm just afraid of getting hurt."
His mother reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know it's scary to let someone in," she said. "But if Andrea is as special as you say she is, then she's worth the risk."
Javier smiled. "Thanks, Mom," he said.
As they continued to drive home, Javier's heart felt a little lighter. He knew that his mother was right. Andrea was worth the risk.
But what if Andrea's heart didn't beat to the same rhythm as his? What if Yuan, the school's heartthrob, always swooped in and stole the spotlight whenever Javier gathered the courage to confess his feelings to Andrea?
Javier arrived home with his mother and brother, his heart heavy as a lead weight. He slunk to his room, where he collapsed on his bed and hugged his pillow close.
Javier sighed and reached for his second phone, hoping for a glimmer of hope. But his screen remained blank, his heart sinking like a stone in his chest. He tossed the phone onto his nightstand and closed his eyes, his exhaustion overtaking him.

Andrea tossed her bag into her room and bounded downstairs to the kitchen, her stomach growling with hunger. She glanced at her phone, hoping for a notification from her enigmatic friend Reiv, but her screen remained blank. With a sigh, she turned her attention to the stove, her mind churning with thoughts of Reiv.
Andrea finished cooking and her phone suddenly buzzed, jolting her out of her thoughts. She snatched it up, her heart pounding with anticipation. Could it be Reiv? She held her breath as she checked the notification. But her hopes were dashed when she saw Yuan's name.
"Are you home now?" the message read.
Andrea's fingers flew across the screen as she replied to Yuan's text message: "Yes, I am. How about you?" Her heart skipped a beat as she waited for his response.
Andrea waited for Yuan's response, her heart sinking like a stone in her chest. Maybe he was asleep, or maybe he was just ignoring her. She sighed and pushed her phone away, her appetite gone. She ate what she had cooked, but her mind was elsewhere. Finally, she gave up and went to her room to study, but her concentration was shot.
Andrea's fingers hovered over her phone screen, her heart yearning for a message from Reiv. But her screen remained blank, her hopes fading like a flickering candle flame. She waited for another hour, but the silence was deafening. With a heavy sigh, she surrendered to sleep, her dreams haunted by the elusive Reiv.
Andrea's alarm clock blared, jolting her awake from a restless sleep. She stumbled out of bed and into the bathroom, her mind still foggy from dreams of Reiv. She splashed cold water on her face, trying to clear her head and shake off the lingering disappointment of his absence.
Andrea whipped through her morning routine, her mind still racing from her dreams of Reiv. She changed into her clothes, her fingers trembling slightly as she fastened the buttons.
Andrea's heart skipped a beat as her phone buzzed, her breath catching in her throat. It was a good morning message from Reiv.
"Where did you vanish last night?" Andrea typed on her screen, her fingers trembling with anticipation.
"I was caught up in a storm of obligations," Reiv replied enigmatically.
"Alright!" Andrea replied, her heart fluttering with excitement. She smiled as she typed her next message, but then she caught Javier out of the corner of her eye. He was sitting across from her, his face illuminated by the screen of his phone. He was laughing and chatting, his eyes sparkling with happiness. Andrea's heart sank like a lead weight in her chest. Javier had been her first crush, and she had always hoped that they might one day be together. But now, here he was, talking to another girl, his smile as bright as the sun.
"Your girlfriend?" Andrea asked, her voice trembling slightly. She tried to sound casual, but she couldn't hide the pain in her eyes.
"Nope," Javier said quickly, but Andrea could see the lie in his eyes. "Just a friend."
"A friend," Andrea repeated, her voice bitter. "But your smile is different."
Javier's words snapped Andrea out of her daze. She blinked, her eyes still stinging from tears. "You know what, maybe we should get inside the classroom," he said quickly. "It's almost time."
Andrea nodded, her voice hoarse. "Yeah, right," she agreed.
As Andrea and Javier entered the classroom, her eyes locked with Yuan's. He smiled sheepishly at her. "Oh, Andrea, I'm so sorry about last night. I fell asleep before I could reply to your message," he explained.
Andrea shrugged nonchalantly. "It's okay. I was busy too."
Javier placed his bag on his chair, but his eyes remained fixed on the two of them, his gaze dark and brooding.
Andrea plopped her bag onto her chair and collapsed into her seat, her body a lead weight from exhaustion.
Andrea's phone buzzed, jarring her out of her thoughts. She remembered Reiv's unread message and her heart skipped a beat. She snatched up her phone and scanned the screen. Her eyes widened in surprise.
Reiv: Don't get too close to Yuan. He can't be trusted.
Andrea's blood ran cold. She glanced around the classroom, her eyes darting to the door and windows, but Reiv was nowhere to be seen.
Andrea's mind raced as she questioned how Reiv could have known that she had just talked to Yuan. Was he following her? Was he spying on her? Or was there something more sinister at play?
