Chapter Thirty nine -The Criminal Sheila’s POV… We walked into the police station with King’s hand on my shoulder giving me support, if it was before I would have flinched and gotten away from his touch. If someone shows you care you shouldn’t shoo them away right? So I had accepted him being close to me. We entered and the police directed me to the investigation room but I told them I would go only if King was with me. He smiled at me and I glared back, I wasn’t doing that to make him happy but to make him my security guard we were in the police station but they were strangers I couldn’t trust them. They agreed and said it was only an identification proceedings so he could come with me. He squared his shoulders as he and the police led me into the room. I looked around and saw that I wasn’t the only citizen who had come to the police station. The cells were filled with people I believed were guilty of something. Several situations came into my mind concerning what they could have done wrong. And I thought, Where were the police when they were committing such crimes? The rape flashed through my mind and I immediately thought of something else to keep my mind off it. We took our seat and the police man turned on his laptop. He went through it and drew out a picture onto the screen. At that moment, time stilled for me as that night came into my mind and the familiar face stared at me but not in a sweaty forehead this time there was no sweat. I didn’t know how long I had blanked out but the police man swept his hand on my face and I came to live. King beside me had also blanked out and the police man was going to do same to him, but I rather pinched him hard on his thigh. He flinched and turned to look at me as a tear dropped out of his eye, but he reached out to clean my face. Which I didn’t know had tear drops, he cleaned mine and I did same for him. He then smiled at me and asked, “Is that him? The criminal?” “Were you just now crying with me?” I asked him surprised. He nodded and shook his head I couldn’t understand so I let it go for the moment. The police officer cleared his throat this time to get our attention. “So from your reaction now, it seems we have gotten the culprit right. Mr. King is there something you are not telling us here? Your reaction just now when you saw the picture says something but I don’t know what. Do you mind telling me?” asked the police officer. “No I don’t, it’s just that he seemed familiar to someone I know is dead but upon closer look, I think I got him wrong. After all this person is alive right? ” he asked. “Yes he is very well alive. So Miss Sheila I would like you to write your statement confirming that, this guy tried to kill you through poisoning. ” said the police officer. She did as instructed and made their way out of the place. A man stood beside their car, dressed in all black and a black hat. He walked towards them with his hands in his pockets and head’s down. King saw him and felt suspicious of him so he grabbed on to me as the man neared her, he turned me swiftly from his way. The man looked surprised that he didn’t get his target but he couldn’t do anything about it so he ran away from there. King looked at me worriedly and asked, “Are you okay? Did he hurt you? ” he asked worriedly. I blinked as tears dropped out of my eyes. And shouted suddenly, Help!!!! Someone help us!!! That’s when King fell on the ground with blood her body and the knife stuck in his body. The police rushed to the scene surprise written on their faces. A few minutes later an ambulance was provided and he laid in it out cold. He couldn’t say anything else, after asking if I was okay. I held his hand as the ambulance took us to the hospital, my eyes were too tired to cry anymore as I sat by the operation theater waiting for him to come out alive. I remembered how this guy has helped me and being with me since day one and him sacrificing his life in place of mine. Says it all that I wouldn’t meet anyone else on earth who will love me as he does. Speaking of which my mother never came back to the hospital even after I stayed there the whole day and the next day till afternoon that I was sitting there, I hadn’t set my eyes on her. An hour later the doctor came out of the room and said, ……
